Scottish life stories of an autistic man

07:10 at Xoko

It’s 0710 and I’m in Xoko cafe, it’s a Sunday. I’m sipping a warm latte. Later I will meet Harris in Aviemore. I had a weird dream about playing football in some sort of competition in Oban although it didn’t look like Oban. There were people there from my high school. Faces I could remember but first names I could no longer remember. The soundtrack at Xoko has ‘suddenly I see’ by KT Tunstall, playing. The cafe has lots of staff but only 2 other customers. It is cold outside, around 0 degrees Celsius. The cafe is cozy. The other customers (couple) look European, Italian maybe. The lady has nice olive skin and brown hair and brown eyes. The man is facing away from me but looks similarly Mediterranean. Oh wait, the couple must be Italian American as they are speaking English with an American accent. Now they’re playing that song ‘young folks.’

I’ve been thinking of Donald Trump this morning. He was in the news again today and yesterday. He’s always in the news. He seems to just talk at the camera, barely listening. I don’t actually dislike him. I liked him when he first appeared. Now I’m not sure. Another couple have appeared in Xoko. Its an Indian couple, a man and a lady. There’s plenty of space so they take a bench themselves. One thing about Trump is he seems to upset people. Lots of people listen or read what he says and get upset. Everyday, all the time. I wonder what makes me so indifferent. Lily Allen ‘smile’ is now on. One thing about Trump is that he doesn’t seem to want something specific. He’s a bit like Hitler in that way. Trump gets something and then he just wants something else. He wanted the Republican nominee, then the Presidency, then Venezuela and now Greenland. I wonder how many people live in Venezuela? I think Greenland has about the same population as Inverness. I don’t think he’s evil. Just to clarify. There’s a song on now that I don’t know the name of, ‘I’ve got you begging for mercy’ lyrics. One thing about Trump’s lot is I don’t think I’d fit in with them. They seem to be all church going families. That’s what conservatives look like I mean. As an autistic person, without a partner and who rarely goes to church I think I’d not fit in with them. I don’t dislike those types. It’s just I don’t think I’d fit in with them. A song is on now I don’t recognise. I don’t like it either.

A familiar song now. Don’t know the name though. Something from the Noughties. Not much good either. ‘Light up, light up’ lyrics. Maybe it’s Snow Patrol?

An old guy that doesn’t look like a tourist has just walked in . He sounds Scottish too. ‘Why does it always rain on me’ lyrics, now on.

We all sleep, dream, wake up and dwell or meditate on things we see or hear. We are all products of our upbringing and the environment we grew up in. But away from our unique reactions and thoughts to topics like politics there is the real world populated by other human beings with their own unique takes and perspectives. It’s an interesting and varied place and it’s never the way you think it will be. I always like to remind myself of that whenever I am dwelling on a particular topic or spending a lot of time on my own.
