I’m Vernon, a Scottish writer based in Inverness. I grew up in Oban on the west coast, studied engineering at Strathclyde, and spent several years living and teaching in China. This blog is where I write about those experiences and what came after.
The posts here fall roughly into a few categories: memoir pieces drawn from my time in Asia — Zhengzhou, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shenzhen — book and film reviews, and occasional essays on things that interest or irritate me. The Graham Greene reviews and the piece on British decline narratives probably give the best sense of what I’m going for.
I was diagnosed autistic as an adult, which has quietly shaped how I see most of the things I write about, though it rarely announces itself as a subject.
I have just finished an MSc in Applied Data Analytics and am working in Inverness while figuring out what comes next. The blog is part of that — a place to think in public, without too much anxiety about the result.
